Online Bookselling and Dropshippers - Why Bother with Having a Physical Inventory?

Copyright 2006 Michael Mould

The Internet is full of online, home-based, business opportunities, and one of the most prolific of all scenarios promotes having a business person create a website and sell products that they never need to own, stock, or even touch, i.e., a virtual store where customers buy products and the seller has them shipped directly to the customer from some warehouse source. In theory, this sounds like a win-win-win scenario, but in practice many sellers have had their businesses ruined, their reputations tainted, and their credit destroyed because of a breakdown in the system or some sort of scam.

For the most part, customers are really only interested in getting the product they purchased, but there are some that try to scam the unsuspecting seller into accepting bogus payments, shipping C.O.D., etc. At the same time, the legitimate buyers are the ones that can ruin the reputation of a virtual store - and justifiably so - by complaining about long delivery times, out of stock merchandise, and lack of customer support on product specific technical issues.

It is rare that the drop ship warehouse gets hurt by any of this, after all, they are not a part of the buyer/seller transaction. However, there are a number of these warehouses set up for the sole purpose of scamming buyers and sellers. They suggest they can supply items at prices that even a diligent person could not find for so little, and thus entice the unwary seller to promote their products. Quite often, these warehouses are outside the US in some country with a reputation for products at ridiculously low prices like China.

Once the seller starts promoting the products of these warehouses, things may go very smoothly for a short period of time. The seller promoting the products of the drop ship warehouse may even realize some real profits. This is part of the scam intended to build the confidence of the seller who ultimately lists more and more items at higher and higher prices until... Well, suddenly the seller finds himself selling a few dozen TV's or high end electronic equipment, collects the money from the buyer, places an order with the warehouse, pays for the merchandise, and gets a message from the supplier that this item is not in stock, but will be shipped in another four to six weeks.

During this four to six week period, this seller - and likely many more just like him - continue to take orders, place orders with the supplier, and spend most of their time explaining the delay to their customers. Then after the six weeks have gone by they begin to frantically send emails to the supplier that go unanswered and suddenly the supplier closes up their website and flees with the money of all the sellers, leaving the sellers to refund buyers out of their own pockets.

I am sure you have heard one variation or another on this topic, but now they have migrated into online bookselling in another way - not necessarily the scams, but the drop shipping opportunities.

The predominate marketplaces have checks in place and policies against the listing of virtual inventories to minimize the probability of fraud to protect their customers and ultimately themselves from any liability. Still there are online booksellers that use drop shipping to fulfill their orders. On occasion, I get an order placed with my online bookstore for a book with a request to ship it to a customer with no invoice information enclosed in the shipment. I fill these orders as requested because there are many online booksellers that for one reason or another find themselves selling a book they no longer have in their inventory. These are normally attributable to honest mistakes that I have even made myself. However, when I personally make these mistakes, I cancel the order and refund the customer, but I tell the customer about the mistake and offer to help them locate a similar copy they can buy. I do this in lieu of having one drop shipped to them for the following reasons:

1) The online marketplaces for the most part prohibit the acceptance of an order for a book you do not physically have in your inventory.

2) I have been able to maintain a 100% customer feedback approval rating and do not want to rely on another bookseller to ship an order in a timely manner.

3) If I place an order to be drop shipped I have no visibility of how the other bookseller will package the book and/or whether it will be sufficiently protected.

4) I grade books conservatively, but based on descriptions I have read in other sellers' listings I don't have a lot of confidence in their grading policies.

5) I am not worried about being ruined by any one sale or having to give any one customer a refund, but I know that once someone compromises their principles, integrity, or ethics, they tend to continually degrade their expectations of themselves and even a minor compromise can ultimately lead to ruin.

It isn't just a matter of what it might do to my business or my reputation to me, I also have a problem with selling anything I don't have, particularly if I can't answer a customer's question regarding the product. I guess this comes from being a buyer myself and my expectation that the party selling something to me should be able to answer my questions and I have a personal distaste for paying a middle man to sell something to me when I could just as easily buy it from the source myself.

Customer Review: IPOD < ZEN 5 PLUS

Zen 5 plus is a great mp3 player. It is easy to understand, I can't vouch for customer service because it DOES NOT BREAK. I had an ILO 1 gig. The thing:

1.) Ate batteries

2.) Would not play songs in its memory

3.) Buttons would break

4.) The recorder function became unoperable

Zen 5 vs. IPOD is an easy choice. Who needs Itunes, when you can download music from Amazon and put it on your Zen 5? No monthly fees, no tears, get music you want, not music you don't want but pay for. Best of all, you can keep all of it in mp3 format!

In addition to all that it also acts like a jump drive. Could you ask for more?

Zen 5 is the way to go!

Mighty Bright XtraFlex2 Dual Super LED Book Light - Pink

Mighty Bright XtraFlex2 Dual Super LED Book Light - Pink
Two Super LED lights in one head gives you the lighting power of 6 normal LED's. Brilliant light output! You have the option of using one or two of the Super LED lights with just a simple tap to our proprietary sensor switch. The flexible neck allows you to position your lighting anywhere you want it. The manufacturer, Mighty Bright, has maintained a reputation as an innovator and leader in personal lighting for over 20 years. As the marketplace and lighting technologies have changed, some things have not - Mighty Bright's dedication to the highest quality products.

Customer Review: The BEST Little Book Light!

I bought this book light as a second book light because I LOVED the Mighty Bright XtraFlex2 Dual Super LED Book Light in Black...and well, so did my mother who is another avid reader, so I gave that one to her!

Now, about this WONDERFUL little light, if you don't want to have to turn on a side lamp next to your bed or sit in a lounge chair with the over head lights on in the living room or perhaps you just don't want to wake up your significant other or child sleeping by you just because your reading. Well then, this little light is absoultely PERFECT for the job!

I was AMAZED at how bright this little light is and you can actually turn it down a notch. There are two settings and even on the highest amount of light, you will not wake up anyone that is asleep or watching television next to you. But if having both of the lights on at the same time is too much light for you, with just the simple push of a button, it's back down to just one light. Very easily adjusted. With it's snake like neck and flexibility the positions of the light are endless and you will be sure to find one that's most comfortable for you and the way you handle your book. (There's nothing worse than having a light right in your face or covering words of the book and constatly having to move it. With this light, that just isn't so.)

Plus, the light has a beautiful light blue tinge to it and it makes reading very easy on the eyes. It's hard not to love. It seems to have just the right brilliance.

Now there are two options when it comes to powering the light. You can buy the adapter and plug it into the wall or you can use three AAA batteries. Which, have seemed to last forever by the way. But neither options are included. You have to buy one or the other. (Or both...depending on what your needs are.)

This light has a clip so you can either clip it to your book or you can have it free standing. It works perfect with the KINDLE, which is what I bought it for, but it also works wonderful for a regular "dead trees version" of a book that you might be reading as well.

This cute, little, bendable light comes in assorted colors so if you'd like something other than pink, please know that that is another option. I believe you could even find one in your favorite color. They have Blue, Pruple, Black, Pink, Silver, Lime, Aqua blue, yellow and a few other colors that I know I'm leaving out...like red. : ) So for the fashionistas like me, practical and fashionable all in one swoop!

Quite honestly I haven't found a better book light and the price is outstanding. So it's basically a win-win situation no matter how you look at it. Hope that helps if your contemplating the purchase. I think it's well worth every penny!

Customer Review: Excellent product!!!!!!!!!

I bought three of these in blue (a spare for me and one for my brother) after thoroughly reading all of the comments on competitive brands. I found the comments praising this model to be right on the mark. When I read it lit up both pages at the same time using dual lights where all other brands required constant repositioning for each page, that was all I needed to know this was the best reading light for me.

I can't say enough nice things about this product. It has dual lights on a flex shaft which you can position to fully illuminate both pages of a large hardback book. You wont need to keep moving the light around to light your pages with this one and the pages ar well lit for easy reading in the dark. But the light is centralized on the book and not the surrounding area so others can sleep while you read.

You can also switch from dual lights to a single light. The flexible shaft on the light is sturdy and stable enough to firmly hold its position over the book even while you move around and turn pages. You can either clip it on the cover or use the clip to hold open the pages. It operates on AAA batteries. The higher quality battery, the longer it lasts. I use the Duracell ultra digital batteries with the blue band.

I cannot think of any negatives about this product. I'm not associated with any seller. I am just a customer who was happy to find a great product. Definitely a good buy.

    Customer Review: Wonderful

I love this little guy. Heats up fast and hot. I've owned a couple Foreman grills and they seem cheaper and quality, and don't seem to get hot enough to always give you nice grill marks on your meats. This is wonderful for singles or couples to cook up a couple burgers or a steak etc. Also makes nice panini. I've had mine over 2 years and its still running strong. What a bargain!

    Customer Review: Not too happy

Sorry to say, I am not happy with the HB HealthSmart Contact Grill. No temperature settings and the one time I used it one of the burgers burned slightly while the second one was ok. Regretably, when I ordered this one I did not know that there was one also available with temp. control settings which I would have preferred to purchase had I known what I know now.

    Teton Bookbag Backpack
    Customer Review: good backpack

This is a very good backpack, and you can't beat the price. It's sturdy, good quality. The only way it could be improved would be to add a mesh to hold water bottles. I am very pleased with this purchase.

Customer Review: More accurate than I am

The 12" True Angel Tool is very much well worth the $13! It is flexible so that you can also very accurately measure miters for less than plumb walls...of which my old house has many. Very inexpensive and very accurate. Why pay a lot more when this tool works so well?
