Life is full of questions; so this article was written with the intention of solving the question on books. Sure do hope that your questions have been answered.

Audiobooks and Technology Converge- Finally!

Okay, raise your hand if you remember eight-track tapes (for those of you under 40, go ask your parents about them). How about LPs? Anyone? You know, those big black CDs? What, you may ask, does any of this have to do with the price of audiobooks in China? Actually, quite a bit!

It's about technology with regards to audio media. Audio media has gone through some major changes over the last 15 years. Everybody knows how great CDs are -- fabulous sound quality, minimal storage space, long lasting (if you take even reasonable care of them).

But when it comes to audiobooks, many people actually prefer to take a technological step backwards to the technology that ruled the world after eight-tracks and LPs -- audio cassettes! (C'mon, I KNOW you remember those :-)

I'm not sure anyone ever tried an audiobook on eight-track tape, and there may have been a few on LP, but they were certainly not a raging success. But when cassettes came into the picture, audio "books on tape" really started to take off. And that's been the prevailing format for audio books until very recently.

Now you can find many more audiobook titles coming out in today's media format champion: CDs. But there are a lot of people who still prefer good old audio cassettes to CDs. This is especially true when we're talking about listening to audiobooks. I happen to be one of those people. Let me explain why.

First of all, audiobooks in CD format can't hold any more than 75 minutes of content. On the other hand, cassettes can hold 90 minutes or more of narration. With cassettes, you're probably going to need two or three to hold a good sized audiobook. But you probably need many more CDs to hold that same audiobook.

Another problem with audiobooks on CD is that they tend to be more expensive than the same audiobooks on cassette. For example, an unabridged version of "Harry Potter and The Goblet Of Fire" on cassettes is just $31.96 on the Barnes and noble web site. The same audiobook on the same web site in CD format is $55.96 -- almost twice the price of the cassette version! Yikes!

Here's the biggest problem I have with audiobooks on CDs. In most cases, when you turn off your CD player while listening to an audiobook, you're not going to be able to start it up from exactly where you left off. But with a good old fashioned cassette, you can do exactly that. If you're listening to a CD full of songs it's not a real big problem. But within audiobooks which can have much longer chapters, you really want to have more precise stopping and starting capability. Listening to audio books on CDs can be frustrating when you're driving if you have to restart the audiobook or try to locate exactly where you stopped every time you shut off the car. Sure, there are more advanced CD players in cars these days that do restart where you stopped when you turned off the car. But it's certainly not a universal feature. And oh, by the way, if you take your CD out of the CD player, you definitely can't just put it back in and start where you left off. With a cassette you can.

Since audiobooks are mostly just narration, most people who buy them don't see the point in paying extra for CDs when the audio quality of cassettes is pretty close to that of CDs especially when we're talking about largely narrative content.

Ah, but wait! What's that I see riding in from the horizon on a white horse? Yes, it's an MP3 player! The newest in the battle for media market dominance may be exactly what the audiobook world has been waiting for! Small size, big capacity, SUPERB quality. PERFECT for audiobooks! And the great news is, there are audiobook stores popping up that specialize in downloadable audiobooks, taking their cue from the resounding success of the downloadable music phenomenon.

Downloadable audiobooks and MP3 players are the perfect convergence of technology. And I think it's fair to say that we will see the number and quality of downloadable audiobooks increasing significantly as major publishers recognize the potential. Many already have. But many more will, and very soon.

One word of caution as you scramble out to get yourself an MP3 player (if you don't have one already). Make sure it either has a "bookmark" feature (which allows you to "mark" where you've left off so you can restart there), OR (like my iPod Nano), make sure if you shut it off, it picks up exactly where you left off when you start it again!

Then, find yourself a great audiobook (or a dozen), and take advantage of what used to be "dead time". Your world will be a much better place for it. And you can hold your head up because you're using the latest audio technology out there :-)

Customer Review: External Hard Drive

The Western Digital 2.0 GB external hard drive is great. It backs up my computer automatically every night with tons or room to spare to download music, movies, etc. I highly recommend this hard drive.

Customer Review: Ticking Time Bomb

I received this drive for Christmas. It lasted two and a half months of light use before failing inexplicably. Blinking front indicator light, but the drive won't spin up and no computer I connect it to will recognize it. The day before it worked fine. Tech support was unhelpful, and I'm loathe to exchange the unit for another from the manufacturer. The drive is sealed inside the plastic shell, making removal difficult. I would not use this drive for anything valuable, it's cheaply made and untrustworthy.

The Reminder

The Reminder
Feist is the solo project of Canada's Leslie Feist, a prolific artist who has also played in one capacity or another with Broken Social Scene, Kings of Convenience and half a dozen other bands. The Reminder, her third release, comes from the same well of quiet, appealing songwriting, and delicate vocalizations that made 2004's Let It Die such a sweet treat. This one is a bit more hushed and ballad heavy, closer to Cat Power than Peaches (with whom Feist has also worked with in the past) but maintains an indie-minded blend of confessional pop, jazzy folk, and lo-fi torch songs. The comparatively upbeat single "My Moon My Man" splits her voice off into unexpected harmonies, just dissonant enough to stick in your head. It's hard to predict where her melodies are going to end up; "Brandy Alexander" starts with a simple snap-pulse, and gradually unfolds into a cathartic chorus of sweeping vocal overlays. Throughout, the record profits from a simple, unfussy aesthetic that keeps the production minimal and the emphasis squarely on Feist's cracking, wistful vibrato. Everything sounds deliberate, but not obsessed over, like an e-mailed wedding invitation. It's a low-pressure vibe, welcoming and content to linger. And linger you will. --Matthew Cooke

Customer Review: I love the music of Feist

This is an interesting album by Feist. "1234" is the highlight of this disc. It is a fun song that makes me feel good. "Brandy Alexander" is a song about a love for a cocktail drink. I love the piano playing and her vocals on this track. "My Moon My Man" is a groovy track with a good beat. She takes the Nina Simone tune "Sea Lion" and makes it her own. She rocks on the guitar on this track. "So Sorry" is a beautiful song with a romantic tone. "Past In Present" is another pleasant upbeat track. "I Feel It All" is a track with good musical arrangements. I love all the percussion instruments on this track. "The Park" is a very soothing sounding track. There is something about her guitar playing that puts my mind at ease on this track. This is a very enjoyable disc from Feist.

Customer Review: Love this CD!

I don't know how I've missed "discovering" this wonderful artist until last year, but I'm making up for lost time. This is one amazingly terrific album!

This hard drive has been a piece of junk since day one, all I have now is piece of garbage that makes annoying clicks when you turn it on; boy you talk about trowing $$$.$$ down the drain. Dampens keystroke sounds, Perfect for home, office, special needs and educational environments, Removable and Washable, maintains natural typing feel, Shows key characters clearly, stays in place and does not shift around, allows for normal typing

Customer Review: Very Happy With It

I bought this for my MacBook Pro 17". It is clear so the light-up keyboard still work perfectly. The original keyboard felt a little flimsy, so this product actually give the keyboard a little more feel to it. Prevent any dust/spill from geting into the keyboard. I just hope they make another one that actually cover the wrist rest area. My wife's cover for macbook has that and it feels great on your wrist.

Customer Review: Worth it!

This skin is great. It's easy to type with it on the keys. It's see through and keeps crumbs, dust and other stuff from getting down in the keys on your keypad.

OBD-II & Electronic Engine Management Systems (Haynes Techbook)
This Haynes Techbook manual introduces the DIYer to OBD-II: what it is, what it isn't, and how it works. Includes information on basic troubleshooting, computer controlled systems, OBD-II monitors, trouble code retrieval, diagnostic routines and component replacement procedures. Haynes Techbook Manuals is a series of comprehensive manuals gives the home mechanic an in-depth look at specific areas of auto repair. Each manual offers easy-to-follow text plus hundreds of hands-on photos.

Customer Review: OBD II & Electronic Engine Management Systems (Haynes)

This book is easy reading and comprehensive. It covers all of the OBD II diagnostic codes for the majority of auto builders. I've found it to be very helpful in diagnosing vehicles with the check engine light on.

Customer Review: OBD-II insight

The book is quite useful to help one understand how the OBD-II system works. It may not solve your current problem, but at least you will have some idea of what causes the "service engine" light to come on and sometimes go off. It makes no bones about the fact that some problems are difficult to solve.

Beowulf (Unrated Director's Cut)

Beowulf (Unrated Director's Cut)
Spectacular animated action scenes turn the ancient epic poem Beowulf into a modern fantasy movie, while motion-capture technology transforms plump actor Ray Winstone (Sexy Beast) into a burly Nordic warrior. When a Danish kingdom is threatened by the monster Grendel (voiced and physicalized by Crispin Glover, River's Edge), Beowulf--lured by the promise of heroic glory--comes to rescue them. He succeeds, but falls prey to the seductive power of Grendel's mother, played by Angelina Jolie... and as Jolie's pneumatically animated form rises from an underground lagoon with demon-claw high heels, it becomes clear that we're leaving the original epic far, far behind. Regrettably, the motion-capture process has made only modest improvements since The Polar Express; while the characters' eyes no longer look so flat and zombie-like, their faces remain inexpressive and movements are still wooden. As a result, the most effective sequences feature wildly animated battles and the most vivid character is Grendel, whose grotesqueness ends up making him far more sympathetic than any of the mannequin-like human beings. The meant-to-be-titillating images of a naked Jolie resemble an inflatable doll more than a living, breathing woman (or succubus, as the case may be). But the fights--particularly Grendel's initial assault on the celebration hut--pop with lushly animated gore and violence. Also featuring the CGI-muffled talents of Anthony Hopkins (Silence of the Lambs), Robin Wright Penn (The Princess Bride), and John Malkovich (Dangerous Liaisons). --Bret Fetzer

Customer Review: Beouwulf

Have not watched it yet, so I can really pass on my take on the movie. I heard lots of good things about the movie from others and wanted to own it.

Customer Review: Flawed in the Re-telling

There are many good things in this movie: The actual characters from the Epic, the basic setting, the intense violence, Grendel, even Grendel's mother. However, and I admit that I am biased here,I just don't think you can re-write a mythic tale that has survived for 1000 years to satisfy a modern director's idea of a good plot.

This movie is not Beowulf, it is a movie based upon the Beowulf epic. As such, it changes the central theme of the actual epic: The war between heaven hell being fought on earth as a struggle between good and evil, man and monster. I suppose that modern ideas of heroism can not accept the mythic heroism of the epic, but I feel that those very ideas are what make the original epic a truly great story.

Taking those elements out make this movie a morality tale about a false hero reaching redemption at last. The movie reflects the cynicism of the modern era I suppose, but it loses the epic qualities of the original poem.

However, if FireWire 400 isn't convenient, Western Digital has you covered -- the My Book Premium hard drive is also compatible with USB 2.0 connectivity. Best of all, you don't have to choose between one or the other because both interfaces are built into every drive.

Western Digital provides software (WD Backup) that makes backing up your data as easy as possible. With a few simple steps you can back up all your data files, or just save your picture and music files. You can also schedule routine backups so you don't have to worry about it ever again. Built for ease of use, this drive is equipped with a capacity gauge that shows how much space is left on your drive. The My Book Premium also includes intelligent drive management features. For example, the drive turns itself on and off with your computer, and Safe Shutdown prevents the drive from being powered down until all your data has been written.

But that's not all. Western Digital uses a smart design to make the My Book Premium look as good as it performs. The elegant case resembles a book and takes up very little space on your desk. Plus, it stacks horizontally and allows two or more drives to nestle neatly together like encyclopedias on a shelf. Inside the stylish exterior is an exceptionally fast, ultra-quiet, cool-running hard drive. Last but not least, the My Book Premium is equipped with free Google software that searches your drives, manages your photos, and simplifies Web searches.

My Book Premium Edition Hard Drives are ideal for:

  • High-speed backup of important documents and images
  • Extra storage for your computer
  • Automatic backups of your existing hard drive
  • Archiving the music stored on your MP3 player
  • Adding plenty of space for digital video capture and editing
  • Saving and organizing your digital photo collection
Note: For basic, less expensive storage option without automatic backup software, consider the My Book Essential Edition 500 GB Hard Drive.

Customer Review: Great!

It is a great product. I mostly use it to back up information. I even used it to back up my videogame data from my Playstation3.

Customer Review: It died a week after the warranty expired

My WD 500Gb "Premium Edition" just died a week after the warranty expired. This hard drive has been a piece of junk since day one, all I have now is piece of garbage that makes annoying clicks when you turn it on; boy you talk about trowing $$$.$$ down the drain. DO NOT waste your money on any of these external drives made by Western Digital.

Customer Review: cashmere scarf

Very soft and warm. The black Stripe is exactly like the picture. My husband loves it. Great value for the price.

Customer Review: WOW! Way SOFT

I bought six of these cashmere scarfs for Christmas gifts and everyone absolutely LOVED them for their softness and gorgous colors. The price was incredible. I can't find them for that price anywhere now. I looked for them because I wanted to buy more, but the prices have gone up.

Keyboard skin for 13" MacBook and MacBook Pro 15" / PowerBook

Keyboard skin for 13" MacBook and MacBook Pro 15" / PowerBook
