Why Publishers Buy Books: 28 Reasons

Editors will buy a book for one or more of the following
reasons:

1. The author's previous books have sold well
2. They love a book and think it will sell
3. They think a book will sell
4. They love it enough to publish, regardless of its
commercial potential
5. It's a book that deserves to be published because of its
value to a cause or the country
6. An editor is passionate enough about it to overcome any
doubts the house may have about the book
7. A new editor has arrived from another house and its
building a list
8. The publisher has the opportunity to reflag a successful
author from another house
9. The book will be the first in a series with strong
growth potential
10. The idea for the book is brilliant
11. The idea for the book is timely
12. The writing is superb
13. The title alone will sell books
14. An author's promotion plan guarantees a book's success
15. The author is a media magnet who can guarantee enough
publicity to make a book successful
16. The author has a national platform such as a column or
a radio or television show that will guarantee continuing
exposure for the book
17. The publisher thinks that a book will backlist and
become an evergreen (like evergreen tree -- sells for long
long time)
18. The book has subsidiary rights potential including book
clubs, audio cassettes or foreign, electronic or movie
rights
19. The book has adoption potential in schools or
universities
20. The house has published similar books with success
21. The book is on a subject that the house has or wants to
build a list in
22. Overcome by auction fever, publishers convince
themselves that, despite the profit-and-loss statement rated
to determine a book's value, they pay whatever it takes to
outbid their rivals.
23. The author wants to switch houses
24. The editor discovers a book on a trip to a book fair
and thinks it will sell, or is caught up in the excitement
surrounding a book, or wants to justify the trip
25. The publisher is sending the industry the message that
because of new management or despite changes in the house,
the houses a player
26. The book being sold may not be a big one, but future
books will have bestseller potential
27. The author has a personal connection with someone in
the house with the power to buy the book
28. Publishing the book will enhance the house's prestige

This is not a definitive list. John Saul, a novelist,
observed if publishers don't want to buy a book, they say
"It's been done to death." If they do want to buy that
book, they'll say "Always works."

Customer Review: Just what I was looking for

I am an experienced developer but fairly new to VB.NET. This book is not for beginners but it is great for someone like myself who knows what they want to do and just wants some good examples and tips. It's a great reference book and a good alterative to Google. The English is clear and to the point. The book is a sturdy hardback and the pages are well laid out. It's easy to read afters hous of staring at a screen. To sum up, I'm glad that I brought it. It has saved me time and money and you can't ask for much more than that :-)

Customer Review: Great Book

There is a lot of information in this book, covering a broad range of subjects. It is well laid out and easy to reference. The CD comes with the current version of the book as well as the author's previous book on VB6. Not really a beginner's book as there are more intermediate and advanced topics. I had not used .NET and hadn't touched VB6 in a couple of years. I needed a resource to help jump from rusty VB6 skills to .NET - this book did it perfectly. It is also filled with advanced topics that I am not currently using but now know where to go when the need arrives.

Customer Review: Sons School Bag

I bought this for my son because he complained about to many books and not enought room last yr. Well this one sure fixed him up nicely. It is not to bulky or to wide but seems to fit him just right. He is 14 and he is about 5'2. It is not as waterproof as I'd like for it to be tho. He got into a downpour and some of his things got wet so that would be the only drawback with this pack.I asked him just now if there was anything he did not like about his pack and he said no he loved it. So there you have, hope it helps lol

Customer Review: A FAT fat-boy backpack

It is a very good bag if you have to carry bulky things which are not very long as the bag becomes bulky on the front but is kind of on the smaller side. Otherwise, I think the color scheme is nice- not too bright but not dull and there are ample pockets to keep things organized. All in all- good for its price.

Customer Review: very simple to use

very simple to use - this video spoon feeds the information you need to get your books started

Customer Review: Worth every penny

I wanted to take a course in QB, but I could not afford several hundred dollars, so, I did some research on training aids and found this to be the best bang for my buck and no gimmicks. I have never used QB and being new to bookkeeping in general, I found this to be easy to comprehend and follow (with or without a full-running copy to follow along with).

It covers the basics of accounting principles and the basic functions (common tasks) of QB. In my case, this was all I needed to apply for a job which required QB...

I am satisfied.

Before You Were Born

Before You Were Born
Books & DVDs Workman Publishing It's the mystery of mysteries-what's going on inside a pregnant woman's belly? That's what Jennifer Davis's older children wanted to know while she was expecting the younger. So to explain, she wrote BEFORE YOU WERE BORN, n

Customer Review: This is great for #2

I don't have a #2 yet but I am an elementary art teacher and let me tell you that I absolutly love this book. It is done in a fun way that tells both the mom and baby's point of view and gives fun facts that kids can relate to, like you were the size of a toster and what kinds of things the baby is working on at each stage of pregnance. I buy it for all my friends who are expecting, especially if it is # 2 or #3!

Customer Review: Good, if you are mainstream...

... but if you are planning an out of hospital birth or a birth with midwives, it's not quite as peachy. There is an illustration of mom at the doctor's office getting checked out early on, a reference in the text to her seeing the doc when baby drops, and then she rushes off to the hospital to push and push in the final pages. No room for birth center or homebirth, the midwifery model of care or self-care.

There is also a full-page illustration of father dusting off a crib.

I also had a hard time identifying with the mother in the illustrations, who is very white upper-middle class in her dresses, make-up and workout clothing.

Parenting, lifestyle, and birth choices aside, this is definitely a book written by a mother, not a writer, and sometimes the rhymes are a bit forced. The illustrations make up for it in their jolly attitude, but are not caldecott contenders- they are quick and dirty cartoon style pen and ink, colorwash type things, with little art.

However, if you see an OB regularly, have a seperate nursery for baby, and like Martha Stewart, this book might be right on target for you!

Baggallini Urban Backpack

Baggallini Urban Backpack
Whether you wear it as a stylish backpack or chic sling bagg, you'll have enough pockets to store everything and anything!

Customer Review: Love this back pack!

I didn't give it five stars because the shoulder straps aren't adjustable. Other than that I love the size and since the wallet is a part of the bag it holds more than my smaller backpack.

Customer Review: I LOVE THIS BAG!

It's perfect! Lightweight, perfect size for everyday and will be great for travel. Two zippers on the outside and lots of slots on the inside for everything you carry in your purse. Also, the straps can be adjusted to wear as a shoulder bag or a backpack to SAVE your back!

Star Wars Trilogy (Special Edition)

Star Wars Trilogy (Special Edition)
What's cool about this video is also what makes it seem amateurish at first: it is neither endorsed nor authorized by 20th Century Fox or Lucasfilm. The result: a montage of interviews with everybody of importance to the Star Wars world--from George Lucas and Liam Neeson to Samuel L. Jackson and Harrison Ford, with intelligently written voice-over narration, and a unique exploration of Star Wars and Star Trek together. This is at once an homage to the Star Wars trilogies and a documentary of its sci-fi precursors, from silent film to Star Trek.

Since this collection of interviews isn't authorized by Lucasfilm, you won't find footage of the Star Wars movies here, although you will find terrific snippets from sci-fi milestones such as Fritz Lang's Metropolis. A youthful Carrie Fischer talk about the interplanetary appeal of the original Star Wars, while a 20-years-older Fischer talks about the films' fairytale-like grasp across generations. Young and older Harrison Fords and Mark Hamills give interesting perspectives as well; the video also sports one of the longer interviews recorded with the man inside C-3PO.

Besides the actual cast and crew of the Star Wars movies including The Phantom Menace, there are interviews here with stars as fans, famous people who love the movies as much as anyone: Sharon Stone, Gary Busey, Hugh Hefner, Magic Johnson, Christina Ricci, and William Shatner. A fun and provocative look through uncensored interviews across the spectrum at all that is Star Wars, worthy of any fan's archive, a must for any serious collection. --Erik Macki

Customer Review: Star Wars Trilogy

This product was never received. The DVD's were to be a Christmas gift and a week before Christmas I had to go to the mall and pay a steep price in order to have the gift for the holiday. While the payment was refunded, the non-delivery was a big disappointment. However my son has enjoyed the videos and he now watches then with his own son.

Customer Review: How this looks on an HDTV?

This LOOKS FANTASTIC on my Sony Bravia 40" 1080p LCD HDTV. I use my PS3 to upconvert and I just couldn't be more pleased.

Western Digital My Book Essential Edition 1 TB Hard Drive

Western Digital My Book Essential Edition 1 TB Hard Drive
This elegant external hard drive, reminiscent of a book, is the perfect storage solution. It takes no more space than a paperback book. Collect two or more and they nest neatly together like volumes on a shelf. Installation is a snap because you don't really install this drive, you just plug it in and it's ready to use. A USB 2.0 simple connection offers convenience and compatibility among multiple computers. Dimensions - Height 6.5 x Length 5.4 x Width 2.1 Weight - 2.5 Pounds

Customer Review: One of the better ones around...

Design & Portability

I had 2 external HD's, which were 250GB and 150GB. It was in two different enclosures, so where ever I went, it was a real hassle carrying two HD's. MyBook is pretty compact with 1TB platter inside, helps slimming the width. Its piano black enclosure is really slick in HD design. I would give this HD the best design in its category. Very simplistic, no buttons, small slit of blue LED in front.

Out of the box

Everything was packed, there were no mounting the HD inside the enclosure needed, unlike my older HD's. I just had to plug and play, it was that easy!

Performance

I have used this for over a month and its performance is average. The specs is on the HD is pretty fast with 7200 rpm and 16MB buffer speed. I have always preferred firewire ports for external HD, because they pack more power which helps transfer data much faster than the USB 2.0's

I have a XP PC and I cant boot my pc if the HD is connected. I always have wait few seconds before the login screen shows up, then I connect the HD. (But if you use this with VISTA, there is no problem).

Whenever I exit from standby mode, my system recognizes the HD as if it was just plugged in... the autoplay becomes very annoying.

Software

The software which comes it it is completely useless. I would even go as far as to say dont even try it, save your energy! Its just a free trial. Download free back up software @ www.free-backup.info. It is much better than is included with the HD.

Price

I bought it for $[...] from amazon. I would expect more ports and features for this price. It does not provide great bang for your buck when competitors like Cavalry 1TB CAXM3701T0 which sells around $[...], have SATA cable and eSATA bracket (faster data transfer}!

Overall Rating: 3.5/5

Recommended:

Yes

Pros

Slick shiny design, Consumer friendly, Compact and portable (1TB platter instead of 2x500GB)

Cons

average data transfer only 1 USB port, average price, software is useless

The Bottom Line

Recommended for the average pc user, if you are advanced.. checking the specs highly advised.

Customer Review: Lot of room ,but a little slow

"I bought the 1tb drive to start backup my computer. It runs Win XP home edition. I had a little difficulties with it, but not too bad beyond that, the drive has a lot of room and finally not too hard to setup. My complain is that the hard drive comes with 32 FAT format, and changing to NTFS you lose preloaded software, and valuable time(over 4 hours formating the drive).

When I first used it I noticed it was not as quite as other said, but I was told some noise is okay. I am a little worried about the drive failing so I am a little cautious about committing to it for baking up now.

I thought it would be a little faster too, but I guess that's not a big deal."
