Electronic Language-Learning Books and Ebook Readers

When it came time this year to order reprints for our paper books on Turkish language-learning -- we hesitated, took a look at technology developments, and decided in favor of ebook publications.

The reason we did so is due to the particular advantage provided by the Adobe PDF format when used with Adobe Acrobat's simple but oh-so-effective text search capability.

And, if you're concerned because you think that you can only access eBook files on full-sized computers -- which fail 'the portability test' -- then think again. Because there are quite a few handheld Electronic Book reading devices that can do the job already (e.g., the Sony Reader, Palm Z22, Handspring Visor, Hiebook, Gemstar Rocket, and Franklin eBookman) -- and several more waiting in the wings.

Electronic Book Readers -- a cost comparison

We can almost hear some of you saying, "Ah, but a Sony Reader or a Palm Z22 doesn't give as much sensory feeling pleasure as a paper-based book -- and doesn't have the same low-care portability."

Well, suppose we told you that we'll be introducing authentic Turkish voice recordings in the next electronic editions of our books. Wouldn't the added audio capability overshadow some (if not all) of the 'sensory feel and low-care' considerations? And that's not to mention the complete absence of Shipping & Handling charges for such ebooks -- and the (no or low) purchase tax relief you'll enjoy.

When it comes to language-learning reference books, that question is a bit of a no-brainer, isn't it.

So which one of these (already available) ebook reader devices should you choose? As always, our first consideration in such matters is, "How much does it cost?" Here are the latest price figures we could find for several Electronic Book Readers that are compatible with the Adobe Reader PDF file-format (our first offered format):

For full-size viewing:

The Sony Reader (measuring 6.9? by 4.9? by .5?) displays book-sized Adobe PDF pages, JPEG images, and plays MP3 audio files... from $299.

If you can live with a small screen, you can also view (and hear) Adobe PDF files on:

Nokia 6680 Smartphones Series...from ?245.50 (Europe), $499.99 (USA)
-- as low as ?135.00 at amazon.co.uk

Nokia Communicator 9500 series... from $779.95

HP iPAQ RX3115 Pocket PC... from $209.00

Palm Tungsten E2 Handheld... from $148.99

Palm Z22 Handheld... from $89.49

Isn't one of these ebook reading devices in your price range?
